Ratter – USA, 2015

‘At this moment someone could be listening… watching… recording…’

Ratter is a 2015 American horror thriller written and directed by Branden Kramer (short: Webcam). The movie stars Ashley Benson, Matt McGorry, and Kaili Vernoff.

Plot:

Emma, a graduate student living alone in New York City, is being watched by a stalker who hacks into the technology that surrounds her – laptop, cell phone, and other web connected devices. This obsession continues to grow as the hacker records Emma’s most intimate moments. When the thrill of watching isn’t enough, the situation escalates to a dangerous and terrifying level…

Reviews:

“Try to imagine following a young, immature college girl around 24 hours a day. Imagine how much of your hair you’d have pulled out by mid-day. Now imagine you could even handle that for 90 minutes. Now be honest and ask yourself how long it would likely take you to fall into a full-on coma. 90 minutes is damn near enough. Especially when nothing creepy really happens until the final 6 minutes…” Matt Molgaard, Addicted to Horror Movies

“Aside from several cheap shot audio bursts of pounding on doors, “Ratter” is too dull for tension to mount anywhere […] Any fear mongering suggestion that the film is so frightening that the first thing anyone seeing it would be inspired to do is change his/her passwords is hogwash.” Ian Sedensky, Culture Crypt

“With Ratter you’ll get a good surveillance and stalker horror plot and a surprisingly realistic and scary outcome. In fact, these are the two words I’d use to describe this film: Scary and realistic. If you’re ready to just take on the role of a voyeur – and the very unpleasant task of imagining what it would be like to be the victim of this crime – then you should be able to appreciate this movie.” Heaven of Horror

“The pace starts slow and continues to burn at a relatively snail pace for the first half of the movie. It isn’t until around the time that Emma experiences her first ‘home visit’ that momentum starts to build. As the narrative progresses both the tone and the visuals get darker and, without giving any spoilers, the end is a real gut-kicker.” Kat Hughes, The Hollywood News

“The general lack of suspense during the first fifty minutes is really hard to look past though, and leaves Kramer such a tiny window of opportunity to inject some buttock-clenching thrills. Ironically though, that last reel and a half is almost perfection; shoulder-stiffening tension of the highest order. The thing is, will there be anyone left watching by the time this happens?” Dave Wain, The Schlock Pit

“Seeing Emma in her underwear, in the shower, clutching a knife, ties into decades of horror/exploitation heroine tropes, largely conjured by a male-dominated industry. Kramer as a man and filmmaker is gravely aware of this. Ratter‘s consistent towing and subverting of genre, and the inevitable hot-water marriage with its ugliest faults makes for a rich, textual piece of digital cinema.” Benjamin Umstead, Screen Anarchy

‘Demons walk among us’

The Vatican Exorcisms is a 2013 American found footage horror film directed by and starring Joe Marino.  The screenplay is by Mauro Paolucci and Salvatore Scarico. The movie also stars and Anella Vastola.

Plot:

Joe Marino, an American filmmaker, travels to Italy to shed light on the phenomenon of exorcisms. Initially, he visits Rome and the Vatican City and films a Black Mass attended by priests.

Then, accompanied by Padre Luigi, an alleged exorcist, Joe travels to the south of Italy, a place where the sacred and profane have always lived together, where Christian rituals are inextricably linked to pagan ones….

Reviews:

“This is a mock-doc that really wants us to think it’s a doc and not a mock-doc, but as either, it’s so unmitigatedly awful, that it really doesn’t matter what the purported filmmakers want us to believe because the only thing that keeps us watching is to see just how awful a movie can get.” Greg Klymkiw, The Film Corner

“There is nothing to offer in The Vatican Exorcisms. The possessed people simply scream a lot. They don’t look very possessed, and don’t really do much more than mutter a few things before flopping around on the ground. The expected happens at the end, but even that winds up getting confused.” Will Brownridge, The Film Reel

“Carefully constructed, this could have been a clever found footage film, but instead has the look and feel of something that was thrown together without much planning. Logic is so sparse within the screenplay that I don’t even feel the need to discuss it.” Ryan Russell Izay, Real Movie News

” …it fails as a found-footage movie too because there is no way even the drunkest teenager would believe this was real. The entire film is edited like a poorly conceived horror movie you would see on YouTube. The music (which should not even be there in the first place) sounds like it came right out of a royalty free music library on the internet.” Lucas Mass, Words on Media

‘2004  2015 Soon’

Butterfly Kisses is a 2018 American horror mockumentary feature film written and directed by Erik Kristopher Myers. The Four-Fingered Films production stars Gavin York, Alyssa Dalgleish and Consuelo M. Edwards.

Plot:

Gain York, a filmmaker, discovers a box of video tapes marked ‘Don’t watch’ depicting two students’ disturbing film project featuring a local horror legend, The Peeping Tom or The Blink Man. As he sets out to prove this story is real and release it as a work of his own, he loses himself and the film crew following him into his project…

Reviews:

The way Gavin’s life slowly crumbles as he digs deeper in to the legend becomes an unusual testament to the madness and self-destruction that can ensue with obsession […] Erik Kristopher Myer’s Butterfly Kisses is a strong horror film and one you should seek out if you want something a different with your found footage horror.” Felix Vasquez, Cinema Crazed

“If you’re looking for a found footage flick that goes a tad against the grain and delivers a great bit of mythology and a convincing sense of reality, then give Butterfly Kisses a go; it won’t necessarily scare the pants off from ya, but it definitely will give you some good chills!” Horror Fuel

” …the onscreen scares in Butterfly Kisses are minimal, but the film does succeed at inducing a general feeling of apprehension. Seeing the tapes of Sophia and Feldman talking about their experiences with Peeping Tom causes your imagination to run wild and results in psychological terror that is much scarier than any jump scare.” Michelle Swope, Nightmarish Conjurings

“It takes a lot to scare me nowadays and while this came across as more mysterious than anything there were a few moments that worked on me effectively. Regardless of this the way it has been put together is nothing short of wonderful with a feeling of descending into an inescapable nightmare slowly building up over the 90 minute run time.” Daniel Simmonds, The Rotting Zombie

“There were strong performances by all involved but kudos to Gavin York for sure. You’ll love him, you’ll hate him, you’ll almost feel sorry for him but nah… I think you’ll enjoy the ghost hunters as well. And Erik Kristopher Myers seemed just as comfortable in front of the camera so double kudos to him.” DC Harrison, Screamfix

“When the focus shifts from the original footage to the descent and increasing passion of Gavin and the concerns of those around him, it becomes a powerful study of obsession rather than folklore with numerous surprising revelations. If you think the subgenre is done and finished, Butterfly Kisses might change your mind…” Martin Unsworth, Starburst

Release:

Butterfly Kisses was released in the US on October 23, 2018, on Blu-ray, DVD and VOD via Gravitas Ventures.

Trivia:

Not to be confused with a 2017 British drama film of the same name directed by Rafael Kapelinski.

Catskill Park has some genuinely creepy sequences that make use of both the dark woods and sound effects. ‘They went looking for a legend… and found a nightmare.’

Char Man is a 2018 American found footage horror feature film written, produced and directed by Kurt Ela and Kipp Tribble (Coffin and Coffin 2) who also star. The movie also features Jeff Kober, Nick Greco, Unique Dowtin and Buddy Wilds.

Plot:

Two friends visit fire-ravaged Ojai, California, intent on making a fake documentary about the infamous Ojai Vampire. However, things take a bizarre and frightening turn when they learn about a different local legend: The Char Man…

Reviews:

“Over 45 minutes pass before something more sinister happens than a discarded doll reappearing in unexpected places or faucets turning on by themselves. A couple of kids in masks start stalking outside the trio’s rental house and, well, that basically sums up the extent of Char Man’s supposed scariness.” Ian Sedensky, Culture Crypt

“This started off slow and only really picked up in the second act when it started to show some promise. Sadly it never goes anywhere. After it ends you feel like there should be another half an hour to actually tell the story of what happened. Instead there is too much “b roll” and no actual film going on.” Lost Highway

Meanwhile, here is the lowdown on Ring:

Ring – original title: リング or Ringu – is a 1998 Japanese supernatural horror feature film by Hideo Nakata, adapted from the novel Ring by Kōji Suzuki, which in turn draws on the Japanese folk tale Banchō Sarayashiki. The movie stars Nanako Matsushima, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Rikiya Ōtaka.

It was remade in the US by Gore Verbinsky as The Ring (2002).

Plot:

Investigating the inexplicable, near-simultaneous deaths of her young niece and three teenage friends, reporter Asakawa (Nanako Matsushima) learns of a story about a supernaturally cursed video tape circulating among school kids.

As soon as anyone has watched the tape, allegedly recorded by mistake from a dead TV channel, the telephone rings and the viewer has exactly a week to live. Those doomed are invisibly marked, but their images are distorted if photographed. Inevitably, Asakawa gets hold of the tape and watches it…

Reviews:

“What strikes the deepest chord in Ring is the film’s imagery, which lingers long after the confused narrative has faded away. Ring presents no explicit deaths at all, and not a drop of blood, but relies instead on simple yet effective sequences achieved with minimal effects…James Marriott, Horror Films, Virgin Books, 2004

“You can feel the goosebumps during Sadako’s manifestation through the cathode ray tube. Given the sheer artificiality of the film’s central concept, not to mention the odd hole in the convoluted and occasionally  lackadaisical plotting, it’s all down to Nakata’s subtle handling of such impressive set pieces that the film works as well as it does.” Jasper Sharp, Midnight Eye

“The cast does an excellent job of gradually building hysteria without resorting to running or  screaming; in particular, Sanada Hiroyuki is quietly effective as Reiko’s ex-husband […] The people behind the camera also perform outstanding jobs, with the subtly manipulative cinematography, jolting editing, and spooky ambient music score gradually building tension to the breaking point.” Nathaniel Thompson, Mondo Digital

“The 1998 film from director Hideo Nakata broke box-office records in Japan. It’s not so much the gore that interests Nakata as the reporter (Nanako Matsushima) digs into the case, it’s the subtle dread that keeps you up at night in a cold, clammy sweat.” Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

“The drip, drip, drip of dread of Hideo Nakata’s film will turn your stomach to ice – it’s not for nothing that Ring is the highest grossing horror in Japanese film history.” Cath Clarke, Time Out

Cast and characters:

  • Nanako Matsushima … Reiko Asakawa
  • Miki Nakatani … Mai Takano
  • Yûko Takeuchi … Tomoko Ôishi
  • Hitomi Satô … Masami

Preternatural – UK, 2015

Preternatural is a 2015 British comedy horror feature film directed by Gav Chuckie Steel from a screenplay written by Paul Dixon Barker [as Dixon Barker], who also stars. The Deadbolt Films-A Gang of Giants production also stars Robert D.D. Barker, Dan Bone and John Brown.

Plot:

When amateur filmmakers Gav and Dixon set out to make a Blair Witch-style horror spoof about the preternatural, they find out that Mark- one of the actors they have hired – is not all he seems.

After a misunderstanding, Mark destroys the video camera Gav and Dixon have been using and the line between reality and fiction becomes increasingly blurred. A genre-bending voyage into the unknown ensues, as the ‘reel’ and the ‘real’ collide…

Reviews:

” …Preternatural was reportedly made with a £100 ($150) budget, so what Steel and Barker have accomplished is even more astounding. A handful of friends, a good idea, woods nearby, and the nerve to pull it off. The film does reward the viewer’s patience.” Roger Leatherwood, Found Footage Critic

” …you might find yourself groaning at the lameness of some of the gags or even at how forced some of it is; but stick with it, because as things progress, it becomes as clever and bafflingly brilliant as anything made for many thousands more than its £150 budget.” Martin Unsworth, Starburst

“Writers/directors Dixon Barker and Gav Chuckie Steel are fully aware that they are not Hollywood grade actors – so they make do with what they’ve got! In this case it’s humor and general lad’s banter – they manage to carry a large portion of the film on sarcasm and piss-taking behavior. Strangely enough – it works!” Top Found Footage Films

Cast and characters:

  • Paul Dixon Barker … Dixon / Paul (as Dixon Barker)
  • Robert D.D. Barker … Caretaker
  • Dan Bone … Dan
  • John Brown … John
  • Jasmine Hoare … Fairy
  • Mark Lockhart … Mark
  • Evie Rixon … Evie
  • Ben Shockley … Executive
  • Gav Chuckie Steel … Gav / Gavin
  • Jane West … Jane
  • Mark Williams … Mark

Trivia:

The film’s stated budget was just £100.

‘Hide the children’

The La Llorona Curse aka Her Cry: La Llorona Investigation is a 2013 American found footage horror feature film photographed and directed by Damir Catic (The Other Side; short: The Lost) from a screenplay co-written with co-producer Ron Gelner. The latter also stars alongside Nichole Ceballos and James Ezrin.

Plot:

The father of a missing teen contacts the creators of a reality show called ‘Paranormal Legends’ to inquire about one of their episodes from a past season, claiming that show had something to do with his daughter Tina’s disappearance.

In order to help the father, the creator of the series James Roberson and his producer Brian, along with newcomer to the show Andrea, took a trip to the place where some say La Llorona (The Weeping woman) was seen. They decided to film the new season there to help shed some light on Tina’s disappearance.

Not listening to numerous warnings and facing unseen forces, their trip to the place ‘where it all began’ turns into a horrifying nightmare. The police found seventeen hours of tapes from season four…

Review:

“I would recommend this film only to people that are curious to see a different take on the story of la llorona, but I do warn that the acting is extremely bad and that if you can get past that, and the at times complex set up of the plot, then it could be a somewhat bearable and even mildly entertaining film.” The Chicana/o Gothic

“There are a lot of dirt cheap found footage horror films that work, this one does not. This may be the worst “movie” ( I’m being generous by calling it that) that I’ve ever watched. Truly, laughably horrible.” H. Campbell

Cast and characters:

  • Nichole Ceballos … Tina
  • James Ezrin … James Robertson
  • Ron Gelner … Interviewer
  • Everardo Guzman … Brian
  • Parker Riggs … Father Albert
  • Gabrielle Santamauro … Andrea

The 16th Episode is released by Gravitas Ventures in theaters, on Digital and VOD on June 28, 2019.

Reviews:

“It cuts between the camera footage of the on-screen cameraman and standard film shots […] Little Horror Movie is a small but solid horror film. With effective use of location and great chemistry with its tiny cast, you should seek it out.” City of Geek review

“Aside from the thinly written characters, the problem may be that Little Horror Movie is all set up then pay off without any sense of mounting tension. It does not help matter the effects-heavy sections do tend to look on the cheap side, even by the standards of low budget horror movies.” Bobby LePire, Film Threat review

“It has a great story, immersive elements, and talented actors. We live in a world where likes=life […] the film’s self-aware humor and very real storyline raise the very real question; how many views is your life worth? It managed to walk the fine line of fantastic and forgettable in the found footage genre and come out victorious.” Horror Buzz review

“The opening scene felt super out of place and so much of the story felt forced. I understand what they were going for but ultimately it didn’t work for me. If you’re a fan of first person POV and possession genres you might enjoy it but sadly for me, it fell flat.” Angie Coronado, Nightmarish Conjurings review

“This isn’t a horror comedy, but its comedy […] does serve as character development. We see what could have been a one dimensional relationship between the two grown men and it makes you realize that their constant arguing is just a trait of their underlying true friendship. Little Horror Movie stands out from the crowd…” Chris Prevost, Pop Horror review

Dabbe: The Possession – original title: Dabbe: Cin Çarpmasi – is a 2013 Turkish supernatural horror feature film written and directed by Hasan Karacadag.

The J-Plan production stars Furkan Bayraktar, Elcin Atamgüc, Mehmet Canbeg, Sabriye Günüç, Sultan Köroglu Kiliç, Oguzhan Kocakli, Cansu Kurgun, Irmak Örnek and A. Murat Özgen.

Plot:

Ahead of her wedding, Kübra is possessed by demons. When an examination reveals more horror, her friend Faruk’, a psychiatrist, tries to perform an exorcism…

Reviews:

“Karacadag has too little story for more than two hours of playing time. Trimmed to under 100 minutes would have been easily possible. In spite of very exciting sequences, I sometimes found it difficult to maintain concentration. Nevertheless, a look is worthwhile in any case, because the film does occasionally provide for some fear and terror.” Florian Halbeisen, 100 Year of Terror review [translated from German]

“The film is a little long at 2 hours 14 minutes but it gets really intense near the middle and end and is a lot of fun. Karacadag has upped the scare factor from his 2012 entry, Dabbe: Bir cin vakasi, also about vengeful genies. He knows how to use the camcorder and lighting to maximum effect…” Victory is Mine Blast review

“The story builds nicely with some effectively unsettling moments as Faruk’s efforts are repeatedly defeated by the Djinn. There’s also a very creepy night sequence in the abandoned town. And the ending is effectively batshit, complete with cards explaining what happened afterward.” Jim Morazzini, Voices from the Balcony review

Dabbe: The Possession is currently available for streaming via Netflix

‘Some secrets should stay buried.’

Mortal Remains is a 2013 American mockumentary horror feature film  written and directed by Mark Ricche and Christian Stavrakis.

Mortal Remains 2: Cult Movie is currently filming in 2019.

Plot:

A documentary focusing on the life, brief career, and mysterious death of Maryland filmmaker Karl Atticus, referred to by some as the “godfather of the slasher film.”

Features interviews with various historians and aficionados including Eduardo Sanchez, director of The Blair Witch Project, who in a 2008 interview posited the question: Why, for nearly four decades, has Atticus’s story been practically eradicated from the annals of cinematic history?

Reviews:

“Mark and Christian deliver a solid tale on a low budget that doesn’t fall into the usual pitfalls of bad acting, a weak narrative, and an unsatisfactory conclusion […] the story takes several intriguing turns until the outstanding ending that delivers an added chill and one hell of an exclamation point.” Crash Palace

“Atticus films and and newspaper articles from the 1970’s help take the audience along for the ride. The documentary technique keeps things interesting and some well-placed, appropriate found-footage adds to the mystery. Mortal Remains offers an original concept with excellent storytelling.” Horror Geek Life

“A few horror scenes exist though not much gore, again this production centers more on mystery and thriller, with the ability of sound storytelling […] a bit of pacing and a few continuity issues occur, but not enough to ruin the overall conceptual design of flick.” Baron Craze, The Horror Times

“Cinematography is about average, but that doesn’t really matter when you glue together the film’s overall journey. Acting really is acceptable, from start to finish, and fits easily into the motion picture – no overacting, no irritating teenager shit – just believable performances throughout.” Top Found Footage Films

The Fear Footage – USA, 2018

The Fear Footage is a 2018 American found footage anthology horror feature film written and directed by Ricky Umberger.

Plot:

On April 19th, 2016, Deputy Leo Cole of the Darkbluff, Maryland Sheriff’s Department vanished after being dispatched to 11628 Hangmanor Rd. The next morning, his body camera was found…

Reviews:

“Director Ricky Umberger proves the power of ingenuity and effort by making this entire project on an iPhone for $300. The Fear Footage is an intensely scary anthology horror feature that produces three fantastic short films corralled into a cohesive movie that will have you jumping out of your seat.” Bro Knows Movies

” … this is the kind of film you look for, something unique, memorable and actually scary. The Fear Footage clearly didn’t have a big budget to work with but proves that you don’t need a huge budget to make a great horror movie.” Bryan Fitzgerald, Fitz of Horror

“Despite some questionable acting and a few moments where you quite quite figure out why a certain character has made a certain decision, The Fear Footage is designed to be a rollercoaster of scares and it does it very well!” Robert Beardsley, Hi-Def Ninja

“While the collection of stories are not revolutionary in terms of storytelling, they are slickly produced and have a strong sense of foreboding dread that seeps through almost every frame of the film, amplified by a clever use of sound.” Horror Fan Films

“Running a little over an hour The Fear Footage is exactly what a horror film should be. Lean, fast-paced with effective visuals and excellent use of sound. The one complaint I have is some of the POV shots look grafted in from an early first-person shooter type game.” Jim Morazzini, Voices from the Balcony

“The entire movie is good, but the final third is absolutely amazing – it’s truly twisted and is 100% terrifying. I don’t get to say very often, if ever, that a horror movie – especially a no-budget flick – is scary, but damn, does this manage to make the hair on your arms stand up.” We Love Horror Movies

Boots on the Ground – UK, 2017

‘War ends at midnight, all you have to do is stay alive’

Boots on the Ground is a 2017 British found footage action horror feature film written, co-produced and directed by Louis Melville (co-producer of The Last Horror Movie, 2003). The Last Bullet Films production stars Ryan McParland, Tom Ainsley and Ian Virgo.

Plot:

Five British soldiers trying to stay alive on the last night of the Afghan War, facing not just the Taliban, but also supernatural forces more terrifying than anything they’ve encountered before…

Reviews:

“There’s a single ten minute long take with the actors travelling more than half a mile over heavy terrain on foot that makes you feel like you’re a soldier on the run too. Your head is dizzy with their excitement […] an innovative and scary experiment in actors literally shooting each other’s performances.” Stuart Wright, Brit Flicks

Boots on the Ground is a fast-paced film with strong performances from its leads. Unfortunately, the film suffers from the use of unconvincing CGI and the absence of an explanation as to who why the footage is being captured. Nonetheless, the ending alone is enough to make this a film worth watching.” Michael Steinberg, Found Footage Critic

“The characters could do with being a little more developed, most are simply stock characters that we’ve seen plenty of times before, the clan pretty much coming off as an Afghan Dog Soldiers troop. The story too, is a little muddled, potentially due to the manner in which it is told.” Kat Hughes, The Hollywood News

“This has a lot of atmosphere, several decent scares and some imaginative patches going for it, but feels a bit too much like a riff on The Outpost, The Bunker, Ni ciel ni la terre, Deathwatch and too many others. Nice to see a revival of the British war film tradition whereby a single unit has accents from all over the isles…” The Kim Newman Web Site

“The direction is spot on, building the tension nicely until a satisfying pay-off. If I have one criticism (we have to have one don’t we) it is that the film’s ‘reveal’ (or one of them anyway) is pretty obvious […] But that is a minor quibble and I am more than happy to give Boots on the Ground a hearty thumbs-up…” Simon Fitzjohn, Movie Ramblings

“I was very impressed by Boots on the Ground, and that is probably the greatest compliment I could give it. I cared about what happened. It is a great war movie. It is a great heist movie. It is a great horror movie. I would recommend this film to anyone who will listen…” Nik Holman, Nerdly

the film’s bifurcating ambiguities, introduced near the beginning when the squad chooses which of two routes around the fort to take, is sustained to and beyond the film’s end, as parallel storylines engage and clash to dizzying effect.” Jonathan Hatfull, SciFi Now

Choice dialogue:

Swiftee: “With all due respect, sir, this country is a sh*thole.”

Cast and characters:

  • Ryan McParland … Swiftee
  • Tom Ainsley … Pawlo
  • Ian Virgo … Ollie
  • Valmike Rampersad … Mo
  • Sally Day … Conway
  • Victoria Hannent … Woman in Burka
