‘Some stories should never be told’

Monkey Farm is a 2017 American found footage horror film written and directed by Ian Messenger (Friday the 13th: Legacy; Fireside Tales; The Hog). It stars Zach Etter, Justin Celani, and Acacia Makarewicz.

‘An exploration of what happens when human curiosity and animal rage collide. This low-budget, high-concept thriller presents a different kind of antagonist, and the same well-meaning-but-doomed kids you love to cheer for as they meet their grisly ends.’

Reviews:

Monkey Farm is far from perfect. But it’s got enough going for it on both the philosophical and “psycho chimp in a suit” levels to make it well worth a watch. If you can look past the found footage tropes and the limitations of low budget filmmaking, you’ll find it a tale that maybe should be told after all, despite what the tagline tells you.” Phil Fasso, Death Ensemble

“Sadly, the film isn’t as bloody as I would have liked. The carnage takes place off camera with the viewer just getting a glimpse of the red stuff. The effects are minimal with the exception of the chimp mask which was fantastic. Overall, Monkey Farm has a lot of potential but struggles with the pacing and length.” Blacktooth, Horror Society

“The movie also uses as many as three cameras to keep things interesting. A found footage film is always more watchable when it has more than one point of view. Monkey Farm raises awareness about animal testing and frightens us on a primal level, all at the same time.” John Migliore, Indie Horror Online

Monkey Farm apes (ho-hum) The Blair Witch Project and Quarantine often and struggles sometimes to stand up for its own identity. The choice of locations are a marvel though, and the overall acting abilities are ranged from mediocre to okay, but never atrocious […] Don’t go in expecting a shining gem because there’s a lot of rough edges which certainly might have been avoided using some more thought.” Jay Creepy, Severed Cinema

Chris Douglas … Tex Smalls
Zach Etter … Ryan
Acacia Makarewicz … Sienna

‘Five friends. One game. Zero chance of survival’

Nightlight is a 2015 American supernatural found footage horror film written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (Haunt; A Quiet PlaceThe Bride Wore Blood). It stars Shelby Young, Carter Jenkins, and Chloe Bridges.

For years, the Covington forest has been shrouded in mystery, with a dark past as a final destination for troubled youths.

Undeterred by the news of a classmate who recently took his life in those woods, five teens journey into the forest for an evening of flashlight games and ghost stories. However, their plans go awry when the friends awaken a demonic presence, an unseen evil that will seize upon their deepest fears-and plunge them into a nightmare of absolute terror…

Nightlight is released on DVD in the UK by High Fliers on 30 April 2018.

Buy DVD: Amazon.co.uk

Reviews:

“The directors choose to leave a lot of the film up to the audience’s imagination, and Nightlight really benefits from it. Questions are left unanswered, but not in a manner that feels unsatisfying or cheap. At 83 minutes, the film feels very brisk, and really flies by. It certainly doesn’t reinvent the genre, but Nightlight tries some interesting technique and provides some found footage fun…” Blair Hoyle, Cinema Slasher

Nightlight is far from a complete disappointment, even with its gimmicky presentation excused.  Divide a line through the “found footage” pile and Nightlight can still have a spot somewhere near the bottom of the top half as decently intentioned and executed well enough to a point.” Ian Sedensky, Culture Crypt

“Ok, the plot and setting aren’t unfamiliar, but the dalliances and successive toying with established horror tropes, the all too familiar sounds of distant, tortured souls in the forest, and jarringly brief images of hooded demons (which are just conventional enough to elicit the correct response from the deepest, darkest depths of your imagination, but simple enough to look seamless, and utterly convincing) culminate in an all-around decent, and satisfying horror…” Cut Print Film

“The film feels like it is aiming for something that also unbuckled Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000) in leaving you questioning whether what the camera sees is real or not. However, this ends up with a second half where the narrative is disjunct and it is not at all clear why things are happening.” Richard Scheib, Moria

“Overall, Nightlight is a taut horror movie packed with some incredible scares and serves as a real treat for genre fans. The performances may not offer anything beyond expectations nor does the POV aspect add anything new but it does come with a few surprises along the way that will remind you to always keep stock of replacement batteries.” Jon Dickinson, Scream magazine

“Anyone with a Handycam and access to some large, sprawling wildlife reserve could recreate almost every single scene, as long as they can find some actors who can convincingly run away from blank nothingness. Being alone in the dark sucks, and being trapped in a dark forest alone sucks even more, but somehow Nightlight wastes this inherently skin-crawling setup on yet another mindless, first-person rollercoaster ride…” Matt Donato, We Got This Covered

Nightlight was released theatrically in the United States by Lionsgate on March 27, 2015, followed by a DVD release on May 26, 2015.

Unlisted Owner – USA, 2013

‘There goes the neighborhood’

Unlisted Owner is a 2017 American found footage horror film directed by Jed Brian (who also stars) from a screenplay co-written with Tyler Landers.

The film was edited as crime scene video evidence, with law enforcement placards showing the date time and whose camera was filming in the next sequence.

A small Illinois community in fictional Lawford County that has been shaken to the core by the murders of a Roth family who had recently purchased a house with a dark history unaware to many.

A radio broadcast of the deaths is heard by a group of friends: Gavin Landers (Gavin Groves), Griffin Potts (Griffin Groves), Tyler Brian (Tyler Landers), Jed Groves (Jed Brian), Andrea Mills (Andrea Potts), and Haidee Summers (Haidee Corona).

The teens realise the murders are only a mile away from where they are going camping. Since the murder scene is so close, they decide to investigate themselves…

Reviews [may contain spoilers]:

“Because the events in the beginning of Unlisted Owner take so long to get through, the ending of the film is very rushed. This leaves viewers feeling like they have just gone through a rollercoaster effect of deaths since all happen within minutes or seconds of each other. ” Samantha Andujar, Cryptic Rock

“Yes, it looks and feels realistic enough but you just want it to move on to the fun bits. You almost wish that there was more footage of the family in the first video but we do not stay with them long enough to care for them. Clocking in at 65 minutes, it is a quick watch and you know what to expect.” Phase 9

“I wouldn’t say Unlisted Owner was a flop, though if there had been more attention taken to adjusting certain elements of the plot to make into something truly terrifying than I think the film would have done well!” Popcorn Horror

” …the last twenty minutes was solid horror and effectively filmed, especially the clever way each of the characters vanish one by one. Despite being obvious in this type of genre it had some good moments, such as the camera battery running out at a key moment, the final (if predictable) shot and a reason for filming that just about holds up.” Daniel Simmonds,  The Rotting Zombie

” …the acting in this no budget feature is actually quite good. Unfortunately the douchebag dialogue is so convincing, I wanted to kill the characters myself. I certainly didn’t care when any of them died. A long build leads to budgeted pull-away kills which would have been okay, except I wanted to see these immature assholes die.” Jason Minton, Without Your Head

‘It’ll cost you an arm and a leg…’

Shopping Tour – original title: Shoping-tur –  is a 2012 Russian found footage horror film written and directed by Mikhail Brashinskiy. It stars Tatyana Kolganova, Timofey Yeletskiy and Tatyana Ryabokon.

A group of Russian tourists go on a shopping spree to neighbouring Finland – only to be attacked by the Finnish cannibals.

The central focus is on a middle-aged woman and her teenage son who is shooting the film, as we watch it, on his cell-phone…

Reviews:

“The first half basically sets up the story and is quite drawn out, with lots of travelogue footage of the mother and son’s journey […] Where the film does hit its stride though is when all sorts of gooey carnage breaks out in the DIY store, and some of the attacks by the crazed locals are quite sudden and shocking.” Justin Richards, Blueprint: Review

“Brashinsky could also have given sharper emphasis to the film’s underlying critical commentary on consumerism, immigration panic and culture-clash issues between Russia and Europe. But these are fairly minor quibbles about an otherwise impressively resourceful and easily digestible genre piece…” Stephen Dalton, The Hollywood Reporter

“Both lead actors are impressive, with Kolganova doing a very fine job of displaying grief as she also struggles with her difficult son. As the camera is often on her, she has much of the screen time to herself and does not falter under the pressure […] A solid movie that manages to excite during it’s brief runtime.” James Simpson, Infernal Cinema

The film was released on DVD in the UK on 26 October 2015 by Terracotta / Sharp Teeth. Extras include trailers for Septic ManYou Are Not Alone and Asmodexia; a photo gallery with twenty-one behind the scenes shots; and a 30 minute making of documentary, ‘You Can Whittle a Hedgehog’.

‘Some doors should never be opened’

The Devil’s Doorway is a 2018 British found footage horror feature film directed by Aislinn Clarke (short: Childer) from a screenplay co-written with Martin Brennan and Michael B. Jackson. Lalor Roddy, Ciaran Flynn and Helena Bereen.

In October 1960, Father Thomas Riley and Father John Thornton are sent by the Vatican to investigate a statue of the Virgin Mary weeping blood in a rural Irish convent, a ‘Magdalene laundry’ that serves as a religious asylum for prostitutes, the mentally disabled, and unmarried pregnant women. In hopes of capturing photographic evidence of this apparent miracle, Father Thornton films their inquiry with a portable 16mm camera.

However, the resident Mother Superior denies knowledge of any supernatural phenomenon. In addition, her impious views toward her wards, and the nuns cruel treatment of them, shock both priests.

When the priests finally gather indisputable evidence of a potential miracle, it leads to an exhaustive search of the convent’s grounds, where they discover Kathleen O’Brien, a sixteen year-old pregnant girl exhibiting signs of demonic possession, leading the priests to question whether the omens witnessed have been the work of God or Satan

The Devil’s Doorway will be released in the USA on 13 July 2018.

Reviews:

“In a genre that has seen so many iterations and overused tropes, it was important to find a way to give this found footage film a unique spin on how it delivers the goods. To help with this, Clarke uses 16mm film almost exclusively which was a perfect way to capture the 1960’s era aesthetic and adds its own level of creepiness to the story’s visual pallet.” Marc Morin, Two Oh Six

Cast and characters:

  • Lalor Roddy … Father Thomas
  • Ciaran Flynn … Father John

Voodoo – USA, 2017

‘You are going to Hell’

Voodoo – aka VooDoo – is a 2017 American supernatural horror feature film written and directed by Tom Costabile. The Hypercube Films productions stars Samantha Stewart, Ruth Reynolds and Dominic Matteucci.

When Dani, an innocent southern girl, takes a vacation in Los Angeles to evade her increasingly complicated life, she learns that escaping her past isn’t as easy as she’d hoped…

Voodoo is released on DVD on September 11, 2018, by Wild Eye Releasing.

Reviews:

“Now, I’m not sure if the slow beginning is intentional, setting it up so the batshit final act is even more disturbing and unsettling, or if lack of funds meant everything but the Hell sequences had to be done on as low a budget as possible. We do get a brief cameo from Ron Jeremy, but that’s it for the first part of the film. The problem is that many viewers may tune out due to the slow start.” Jim Morazzini, Beneath the Underground

“I want to appreciate Voodoo on some level for its foolhardy fearlessness to be unapologetically gonzo. Yet disregarding “horror” far tackier than it is taboo, Voodoo has the impenetrable problem of being wholly inappropriate for “found footage” while treading in a deep end of “out there” ideas. That’s a place where its actors, budget, and threadbare story simply can’t swim.” Culture Crypt

“Time spent getting to know Dani quickly grows repetitive and dull, we’re constantly left wondering why this or that scene is being filmed at all, and possible themes of karmic justice and guilt are squandered. It’s never scary or unsettling — even as hell’s demons and blacksmiths (?) commit vile acts before her and our eyes — and the weight of it all simply never comes across onscreen.” Rob Hunter, Film School Rejects

“The length of time given over to documenting the Underworld is in itself unusual, and helps mark this title out as something a little different. The weaker aspects, as may be expected, are in the scripting, dialogue and acting, but even with these frailties the bad trip intensity and dark humour at work make this an intriguing chapter in new horror.” Robert W Monk, Flickering Myth

“I’ll not spoil the fun of the last 40 minutes, but it’s fair to say that Voodoo is very much a film of two halves. If the first coaxes you in, perhaps leaving you to remark that though its characters are likeable and well-written there’s little of note going on, the second half – much lighter on dialogue, if we don’t include the incessant screams – is more of a surreal, gory, perverse nightmare.” Stuart Willis, Sex Gore Mutants

“As a whole, VooDoo is an overly ambitious mess that never decides quite where it’s aiming for. As a found footage film, it is flawed, and while the extravagance of the second half is at times impressive, you never feel fully engaged, as if everything is too detached to be interesting. In truth, the film never recovers from Ron Jeremy dancing.” John Townsend, Starburst

“manages to put a spin on the fatigued found-footage-horror subgenre, via conceptual simplicity and a heightened sense of foreboding — the idea that when the worst finally does happen, it’s gonna be very, very bad. Unfortunately, once Tom Costabile’s debut feature reaches that point, it all goes to Hades in the most literal sense, with a prolonged climax that’s rather too much like a tour through an evangelical’s Halloween “Hell House.” Dennis Harvey, Variety

“I loved the turn the movie takes. It makes the first 45 minutes of dull, worth it. It also shows it’s budget with effects so poor they shouldn’t have been done. At times it felt more like walking through a haunted house for Halloween than a movie production.” Jason Minton, Without Your Head

Ouija: Blood Ritual – formerly Blood Ritual – is a 2017 American supernatural horror found footage feature film written and directed by Dustin Mills (Halloween Spookies; Bath Salt Zombies; Zombie A-Hole; et al). Mills also co-stars, alongside Kayla Elizabeth, Rob Grant and Brandon Salkil.

Three Ohio filmmakers set out to debunk famous internet urban legends and rituals. When one of the rituals calls for a blood sacrifice, the trio unwittingly summon an ancient primordial evil that won’t stop until they’re all dead or they will submit to his evil power…

Reviews:

On the whole, this is a rather enjoyable and engaging found-footage effort which has some minor problems inherent in the setup due to it’s origins in the format although they aren’t all that detrimental overall.” Don’s World of Horror and Exploitation

“One of the better aspects here is the fact that the film’s presentation, where it’s the behind-the-scenes setup of the group for the show, provides a lot to really like. Seeing the team doing their preparations here with the discussions relating to what case to attempt, providing background information on what they’re testing and explaining the cause of each step for the tested ritual gives this a nice creepy sense that’s quite fun to watch.” GL84

Haunted – aka Ghosts – is a 2013 British horror feature film directed by Steven M. Smith, Zane Casablanca, Svenja Quazzani and Zane Quazzani.

In 2018, a sequel, titled Haunted 2: Apparitions was released.

A TV crew films a paranormal investigation…

Reviews:

“Found footage movies that are more insulting in their exploitive nature and half-hearted attempts at plots at least have things going on. Favoring realism over entertainment in this case makes for a movie that had a good idea for a location and an updated take on the rote ghost hunt template, yet forgot to include genuine suspense anywhere in that formula.”

“The dialogue and bickering is uninteresting, the frights start to become more obvious, and therefore much harder to take seriously (although I am sure I would have been terrified if I’d been one of the people unaware of the fakery), and the whole thing starts to overstay its welcome, despite clocking in at just over 80 minutes.” Kevin Matthews, Flickfeast

” …there might be a twist at the end, it was hard to tell through the amateur hour camera work and my building nausea. By then, if you have the slightest rat’s ass of a concern about what happens, you must be an investor in this movie. That being the case, I hope you didn’t put all your eggs into the basket of incompetence that is Haunted.” Rob Getz, Horror News

“The contestants are both bland and forgettable, with the handheld footage not helping matters due to the poor quality of the production […] It’s a cash-in pure and simple, made to be picked up by a dumb distro that is fast losing their eye for a good movie. Worst of all though, it’s just interminably dull.” Dave Wain, The Schlock Pit

‘What happened to #DropTheMike?’

Followed is a 2018 American found footage horror feature film directed by Antoine Le from a screenplay by Todd Klick and produced by Matthew Brewbaker. The movie stars John Savage, Blanca Blanco and Christopher Ross Martin.

Taking place entirely on a computer screen, the story unfolds as an unseen observer clicks through the video posts of DropTheMike, a controversial ‘vlogger of the macabre.’

When a famous clothing brand offers to sponsor his show if he can gain fifty thousand more subscribers, DropTheMike kicks his vlog into high gear and recruits three friends to do a special Halloween-edition vlog to be held inside the reputably haunted Hotel Lennox in downtown Los Angeles, where several famous serial killers stayed while on their killing sprees and where, more recently, a female tourist’s body was found cooking inside the basement ventilation system.

However, when sinister things happen to the crew after they play a forbidden ‘elevator ritual’ game, DropTheMike commits himself to figuring out if it’s malicious fans of his vlog messing with them, or the hotel’s evil spirits intent on murdering them all…

Followed is currently on the festival circuit and will be released in 2019.

Reviews:

“The acting, which is the nuanced art of actors acting like normal people who are acting, was believable. The story had enough turns and jump scares. The cinematography and score add to the building tension. I recommend Followed.” Luke Lucas, 1428 Elm

Followed borrows from the found footage genre, while also focusing on character development and more traditional narrative elements. It’s a horror movie for today’s technological world, with its eye on the creepiest urban legends of the past. It also has a surprising moral message.” John Migliore, Indie Horror Online

“Although some of the effects looked a little fake, Le did a great job at building dread throughout the film. A lot of the scares weren’t about what you saw, they were about the buildup and anxiety leading up to what you saw. There were numerous ‘Blink-and-you’ll-miss-it’ scares that I just loved catching.” Angie Coronado, Nightmarish Conjurings

“There are some jump scares, and like many of the other found footage movies I have seen, rely on shaky cameras to cause confusion. The scenes in the basement and boiler room of the Lennox though, had a very ominous tone and provided some truly suspenseful scenes. I was on the edge of my seat, and even with only minutes remaining, I was thinking “how is this gonna end?!” This is a fun flick to experience!” Sinful Celluloid

Paranormal Farm is a 2017 British found footage horror feature film written, directed by and starring Carl Medland (The Spiritualist). The movie also stars Lucy French and Darren Earl Williams.

A sequel, Paranormal Farm 2: Closer to the Truth, was released in 2018.

A middle-aged couple living on a remote farm put out an advert for a paranormal investigator after their daughter went missing in the woods. Since their daughter’s disappearance, nothing has been the same around the farm. We see what Carl Medland captures on camera…

Reviews:

” … due to the earnest intent of the filmmakers and a basically sound story, the few moments where it does lag a bit quite often lead to bits of humour and irony, which also work well within the context of the film.” Jane Foster, Britflcks

Paranormal Farm is everything a great found footage film should be; an experience of simulated reality to lose yourself in, only to be scared shitless by fantastic classic scares. It’s a whispered ghost story put to film and I thoroughly enjoyed it!”

“It is testament to Medland just how impressive an experience this was considering the very indie stylings of it. The performances of the three main actors are very very good indeed and that adds so much to the film, it elevates it from the dense layer of awful found footage horrors out there.” Daniel Simmonds, The Rotting Zombie

‘What could I find out about you?’

Afraid is a 2014 American found footage horror feature film directed by Jason Goldberg (creator of Punk’d)  from a screenplay by co-producer Nick Kreiss. The movie stars Alanna Masterson (The Walking Dead; Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), George Byrne and Luke Baybak (American Horror Story).

George (George Byrne) takes his girlfriend Alanna (Alanna Masterson) to a weekend retreat at cabin in the mountains. However, their romance getaway morphs into terror, when they realise their every move is being watched by the owner of the cabin they are staying at…

Reviews [may contain spoilers]:

“The idea of an entire house being under surveillance was seen in Hangman, and the drama is so underplayed that it’s ineffective. Afraid may be of interest to fans of The Walking Dead, as it features future series regular Alanna Masterson. Otherwise, you may be better off simply watching your neighbors.” Mike Long, DVD Sleuth

” …the cinematography is dreadful. The entire film is a bit blurry and distant, I know they were going for a look as if it was filmed from the security videos, but in the end, it just looks bad. Afraid is painfully slow. There are a few attempts at jump scares, but even they fall flat.” Horror Fuel

” …this invasion of privacy film has no suspense whatsoever, the boring conversations we sit through with the couple as they lay about the house doing nothing lead up to absolutely nothing in the end, the “big reveal” was not so much a surprise as a “oh come on, really?”, it actually made me angry.” Ken Kastenhuber, McBastard’s Mausoleum

Release:

Afraid was released on digital and DVD by Well Go Entertainment on October 2, 2018.

The original title was Interference

‘Death follows those who seek it’

Dead of the Nite is a 2013 British horror feature film written, edited and directed by S.J. Evans. The movie stars Tony Todd, Joseph Millson, Cicely Tennant, and Gary Mavers.

Plot:

“When a group of ghost hunters investigate the infamous Jericho Manor, they soon realise it’s not just ghosts that go bump in the night! As people get murdered, the survivors need to discover who or what’s killing them before it’s too late….”

Reviews [may contain spoilers]:

” …its experiment of dabbling in multiple formats never fully succeeds in creating an enveloping experience.  The whodunit mystery is so-so and the final third lingers nearly to a standstill while the momentum does the same.  With respectable acting and respectable value for the budget, “Dead of the Nite” is above average, but unremarkable.” Ian Sedensky, Culture Crypt

“There were some twists and turns to the plot that I was not expecting, mostly due to knowing almost nothing about the film beforehand, but very little about this movie struck me as great. My biggest complaints are definitely the weak scares and the even weaker (and nearly bloodless) kills.” Chris Egan, Horror-Movies.ca

“It means nothing that we know who the antagonist is right from the jump because the film is absurdly flat. I mean absurdly flat. There isn’t a single stimulating moment in the entire production – which looks like novice work if I’ve ever seen it – and that detriment makes it nearly impossible to even finish the film. No one is likeable. No mystery waits.” Michael Klug, Horrorfreak News

” …a mundane piece […] The eventual revelation of the killer’s identity comes with a reasonable surprise […] Todd is clearly playing into his latter day role as horror icon and hams it up, giving the part the full force of his mellifluous basso voice.” Richard Scheib, Moria

” …a tight story with decent cameo and cheesy acting does not a film make overall. Dead of the Nite is flat out boring and uneventful – even the death scenes are pretty bland. There are some things done right with this hooded/masked figure, but ultimately I’m not impressed.” The Other View

” …with a £20,000 budget it was really well shot, with great use of sound especially in regard to the whispers and understated noises that came from the house. The cast are all solid in their roles and although Tony Todd has only a cameo, he does tend to give the film a certain authority…” Dave Wain, The Schlock Pit

” …the film is creepy in all the right spots, features plenty of shocks, tension and suspense scenes, and keeps the audience guessing about the goings-on until the very end, when the killer isn’t pulled out of a hat though but presented with a proper motive and all. Plus, the movie’s very nicely acted by all involved.” Mike Haberfelner, Search My Trash

“Whilst there aren’t any true gore scenes and the mystery is easy to figure out, Dead of the Nite has enough in its briefcase to at least deliver the odd moment that is worthy of praise. I wasn’t expecting much, but I enjoyed the few jolts and the attempt to make the stalking sequences as scary as possible.” Luisito Joaquin Gonzalez, A Slash Above…
