Reviews [click links to read more]:

“Most found footage horror movies feel like they’re either terror inducing first person scream-a-thons or slow burn, atmospheric movies that send a shiver down your spine. Unfortunately, it’s the latter that I feel the movie fails to deliver.” BRWC

“The one thing that makes The Lost Footage of Leah Sullivan work from the very beginning is the cast. Specifically, Anna Stromberg as Leah Sullivan. She is charming and sweet but also has a drive that I can only be impressed by. Also, a lack of fear that is dangerous, but hey, that’s what makes this movie so creepy to watch.” Heaven of Horror

“The impact of a small crew, a small cast, and a simple but effective concept really drove home that the found footage genre can be revitalized in the simplest yet most refreshing of ways. Lost Footage is an absolute must watch for anyone who (like me) finds themselves jaded and burnt out on horror full of jump scares and orchestra stabs.” Horror Buzz

“It can easily stand alongside some of the best the last couple of years have had to offer to the genre, less in-your-face visceral than Hell House, LLC, but with a mysterious mythology like that of Butterfly Kisses. In short, there’s more to be explored here.” Horror DNA

“A strong entry into the found footage genre from a director who understands the power of a black screen, the power of what you hear. Some jump scares have been done before but I’ll give them a pass as they still worked; the creep factor was well executed overall.” The Movie Waffler

“If you’re not a fan of found footage films this probably won’t do much to change that. The lack of extreme shaky cam and out of focus footage should make it easier to watch, however. If you are a fan of the genre, however, The Lost Footage of Leah Sullivan should be right up your alley.” Voices from the Balcony

The Hinsdale House – USA, 2019 – review

$

The Hinsdale House is a 2019 American found footage-style horror feature film about a group of actors staying in a supposedly haunted house.

Directed by and starring Steve Stanulis (Chronicle of a Serial Killer; Clinton Road) from a screenplay co-written with Derek Ross Mackay, the movie also stars Eric Freeman, Victoria Oliver and Ricardo Manigat.

Plot:

Actors and crew arrive at the actual Hinsdale House in upstate New York and prepare to shoot a horror movie over the next few weeks. The owner of the property offers a very real warning of the potential dangers of such a project but the filmmakers are adamant and set up GoPro cameras in every room in the hope of recording paranormal activity that can be used in pre-publicity.

Before shooting can even start the cast and crew are subjected to the very real evil that occupies the house and surrounding woods first hand…

Review:

This brazenly cheap production lasts just over an hour which is a relief as it’s so patently a rip-off that only the most gullible idiots will be taken in by the pathetic and annoying presentation. For starters, the ‘cast’ turn up at the Hinsdale House and film themselves on their phones on a balcony that is clearly not at the same location. We are then told about 4K GoPro cameras in every room filming everything but are subject – for the entire movie – to constant video drop-out interference of the VHS era which makes no sense and is insulting to anyone watching it. Nothing really happens beyond Steve Standulis saying “guys” a lot and when it seems to, it makes no sense and is tedious beyond any way that can be explained here.

Steve Stanulis wants your money. If you want to give it to Steve, feel free to click on the Amazon link below and find out for yourself. Anyone with any sense will avoid giving this man any more money to ever pick up a camera.

Paranormal Farm 2: Closer to the Truth is a 2018 British found footage horror feature film about continuing strange occurrences at the same isolated farm.

Written, directed by and starring Carl Medland (The Spiritualist), the movie also stars Lucy French, Robert Gray and Darren Earl Williams. It is obviously a sequel to Medland’s Paranormal Farm (2017).

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“There is a triumphant, outsider art glow to both Farms, shining like the phantasmagorical radiance of the films’ night-vision sequences, capturing eerie things like the evil glare of a pony’s eye. It is rare to watch something so brilliantly (accidentally?) weird, and so faithfully sinister, too.” The Movie Waffler

“This film was a real joy to watch […] to really create the illusion of this time around things being real, things have to seem…real. That means for well over an hour of this nearly one hour 50 minutes film nothing scary happens at all.” The Rotting Zombie

” …it’s a very honest film, one that reveals its own tricks and talks about how scenes are staged, but rolls it all into a storyline that might be a bit on the slow-burning side, but that’s also pretty engaging…” Search My Trash

‘He made them pay for their sins’

Penance is a 2009 American horror feature film written and directed by Jake Kennedy. The movie stars Jason Connery, Marieh Delfino, Lochlyn Munro, James Duval, Graham McTavish, Eve Mauro, Alice Amter, Tracy Coogan and Michael Rooker (Slither; Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer). Horror film icon Tony Todd has a minor cameo role as a sinister chauffeur.

Plot:

Single mother Amelia (Marieh Delfino) turns to stripping as a means of making ends meet and winds up the unwilling subject of a grim purification ritual.

When dancer Suzy is beaten in an attack that leaves her unable to perform, she asks Amelia to cover her latest gig. Reluctantly accepting so her friend can convalesce, Amelia begins to grow uneasy when her driver (Tony Todd) taxis her to a dark and remote location…

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“Jason Connery’s epilogue scene is pure padding, serving no function except to nudge the running time far enough above 80 minutes to satisfy the modern definition of feature length— and even so, Penance would have been better off without it, as the epilogue’s action starkly underlines the absurdity of this footage ever being found in a form slightly resembling what we see.” 1000 Misspent Hours and Counting

“Kennedy however takes what budget he has, adds in some awesome special FX and some characters you actually can care about and comes out with a very clever and well put together modern exploitation film. It definitely belongs on the shelves of those who like their horror a little bit nasty.” HNN

“Ignoring all that, it’s still just a terrible movie. McTavish fancies himself a religious man, which means were treated to the usual babble about cleansing sins and other shit, as he cuts off women’s genitalia. Riveting. And when he’s not doing that, the women are being tasered or whipped, or just plain shot in the head for various infractions…” Horror Movie a Day

“Marieh Delfino is our lead actress and thankfully she’s very strong in her role here, giving it her all as a mother figure pushed into extraordinary circumstances. She makes the role and takes some pretty bold direction here and you can’t help but respect her. The real star of the show though is Graham McTavish.” Rogue Cinema

“You know a movie is gonna be grim and harsh when Michael Rooker provides the bulk of the comedy relief. Its plot is perhaps a tad too derivative of the recent French shocker Martyrs, it’s not what you’d call a pleasant viewing experience, and the ending flat out sucks. M.O.M. Mothers of Monsters – USA, 2020 – reviews

M.O.M. Mothers of Monsters is a 2020 psychological thriller feature film about a mother’s concerns her teen son could be a psychopath.

Written and directed by Tucia Lyman, making her feature debut, the movie stars Melinda Page Hamilton, Bailey Edwards and Edward Asner.

Review:

Jacob Bell is mean. Jacob is scary. Jacob is also highly unpredictable. Is Jacob a sixteen-year-old psychopath?

Bailey Edwards expertly portrays a very troubled and violent teen in this found-footage thriller from Tucia Lyman. Told (primarily) through the eyes of Jacob’s mother Abbey (Melinda Page Hamilton), M.O.M. is a perfectly created case study on the determination of whether or not the child of a single, forty-two-year-old mother is disturbed and capable of extreme hostility.

Abbey Bell spends the majority of her days installing cameras around her home, in particular within the confines of Jacob’s bedroom to capture any and all vicious behaviour.

What begins as uncovering some potential warning signs (i.e. circled ammo and assault rifles in gun magazines) goes chaotic with his obsession in Playstation war games and experimentation on his new pet rats. As Jacob’s mannerisms grow more sinister, so does Abbey’s crusade to define his motives and ultimate objective.

Each appearance of Abbey on camera is more desperate and hopeless than the last as she concentrates on mothering Jacob to the best of her ability while keeping him at a short arm’s length to avoid possible alarming situations.

As Abbey introduces her relationship with her mother and the family secrets begin to unfold, it becomes a countdown to nature vs. nurture… what is learned as opposed to what is an inevitable hereditary circumstance? Jacob continues to play the good boy when in front of his grandma, rambunctious teen in front of his friends and unleashes his dark side amongst his best buddy without any remorse.

Melinda Page Hamilton is absolutely outstanding as the frightened yet strong parent, forced to confront the demon – that of which is her son. Her perseverance is relentless and unwavering, as she consults with the family therapist portrayed by veteran Ed Asner. Much to the dismay of a single mom in emotional need to fix her only child, everything comes to a shocking and awful climatic end that only exists between Abbey and Jacob.
